While in Bangkok, I was told that the MaeKlong is the only train market in the world, and I have to say that I found the entire concept astonishing. Twice a day, a train actually runs through an enclosed market while people sit alongside the tracks selling their wares. Inches from death they are!
People have their goods on trolleys which they wheel back a few inches when the train approaches, and nobody seems particularly bothered as the train thunders through, nearly ripping the stall rooves off and deafening everybody.
I couldn t imagine this happening in Britain, just imagine the health and safety crew, they’d go into meltdown.
While walking through this market I began to fear what I might see next..
Some of the goods on display, I have absolutely no idea what these are, and had no desire to find out……they smelt rancid!
Many people were chopping up live fish and crabs, and lobsters were strung up still alive. Being a vegetarian I began to dread what was around every corner…I feared I may come across someone beheading a chicken….or worse!
Keeping my head down, I practically ran through the market, which was a stupid idea as the floor was covered in slimy water! It was such an astonishing place……but I know why it s the only train market in the world now, because noone else would want one!
