Don’t blink….you might miss my turnip crop!
Drum roll please…..BEHOLD my harvest. Here are examples of my beetroot, carrot, parsnip, lettuce and onion crops! Even the slugs have turned their noses up at these offerings. I have NEVER known such a dreadful year for growing veg….NEVER! The endless rain has wreaked havok right across the U.K. The farmers and all gardeners are suffering. Apparently we’ve had to import brocolli as our crops have failed, it’s really expensive in the shops at the moment.
This is how my veggie patch is looking at the moment. What do you mean it looks a little bare???? Can’t you see how fantastic the fennel is and that BRILLIANT courgette in the corner that’s flowering?
There’s not a lot to be said about my rhubarb.
I have had fresh salad and spring onions all summer, but I grew them in the greenhouse. The only outdoor crop to do well this year was potatoes!
I’ve had a bumper crop of strawberries, the only problem is that Sam gets to them first, EVERY time!
And Annie makes short work of the logan berries. I’ve never had fruit picking dogs before. Last week Sam stole a peach from a stall outside the green grocers, most embarrassing it was! They even snatch at wild blackcurrants while out walking.
I am hopeful that the plums, apples and pears will do well though. I have to make sure I pick them before they burst as the endless rain has plumped them out a little. I will re-seed the veggie patch, there’s still time to try for a late autumn crop but I’m not hopeful. Last year we had similar problems with endless rain so I’m beginning to wonder if this is our new climate, humid wet summers. If it is then we’ll all have to re-think what we grow!
What hurts the most is the rhubarb. I love it. But it only appears for a short while here…
I love rhubarb too, my neighbour turns it into a delicious crumble for us…..truly a dismal year veggie wise.

Must be very disheartening to have the weather ruin your hard and hopeful work… but that courgette plant does look good… so why only the one!! Wretched old rain eh…..
I won’t ask if the fruit has any adverse effects on the dogs!!! xxxx
Lol….I put 20 courgette seeds in along with peas and beans and NOTHING sprouted….except that lone plant. We have suddenly acquired a red squirrel so I’m wondering if it’s been digging the seeds up!
Fruit and dogs…..maybe too much info here but Sam did poop a slimeball one night that contained at least six [visible] plum stones! And Annie vomited something even worse……xxxxxx
There will be a price to pay for basic veggies and fruit as a consequence of the strange weather. We will see it, we will forget why the prices hike, and we will complain.
So far, this year, though continually suffering with a lack of good light and low temperatures, we have had rain but, not had the inundations that other places have suffered through the so-called summer months. (Spring was a different story, it was sooo very wet). My nasturtiums are just leafing, there’ll be no time for flowering; soft fruits are coming into flower here, they are not yet fruiting….will there be time for them. Some late strawberry crops have failed for the growers. There are too many rotted ones from the damp and general wet. Those under cultivation cloches will probably be alright.
It is a shame. I hope the jet stream becomes kinder to us all, on both sides of it.
Yes I think the prices are going to saor….and I hope this is the last year we get so much rain….I’ve never known it be so wet.
At least I got my naturtiums flowering along with a lot of bedding, the baskets at least are happy!xxxxx
Oh poo my comment went missing. I said that I had lots of lettice if you want to come and get some and a few other bits are coming along but it is very hard this year.

You seem to have twice as many plums as we do, our Bramley apples all fell off the tree, 15 cherries, the pears are tiny, and no sign of quinces at all. We are doomed I tell you.
Hahahahaha….well you had 14 more cherries than me, and the birds got the only one! My apples are doing great but I think that’s because the tree is ancient and nothing ever bothers it. We get about 10 bin bags of huge apples of it every year. I am getting worried about the weather though, the summers are becoming so much wetter according to the little weather book I keep. The spuds were gorgeous, I’ve kept two containers of them for bigger ones! Yes, yours should be ready now, you’ll have to let me know how you get on. I give the plums to my next door neighbour, she turns them into delicious pies and crumbles for me. Smashin it is!!!!!xxxxx
