A fundraiser and a new herb garden

I’ve signed up to do a firewalk for the rescue. I wasn’t even slightly concerned until everybody I told stated that I must be absolutely crackers! Now I’m beginning to fear for my feet!

If anyone would kindly like to sponsor me, the justgiving link is below. Every penny will go direct to the animals. A huge thank you to anyone who does!

In other news I have created a new herb garden as my old one is completely overgrown. I decided to plant it under the monkey puzzle tree which was over-run with grass and weeds.

Curly cat kept me company, as always.

Finally, we got it weeded.

In went the herbs. Sorrel, flat leaf parsley, orange mint, broad leaf sage, French tarragon, variegated lemon thyme and creeping lemon thyme. I may transfer some chives across from the over-run bed, a girl can never have too many chives!

This little lot should be happy, they’ll just love my poor sandy soil! I just need some wood chippings now which daughters’ partner has heaps of, I sure am benefiting from him having removed a couple of  dead trees.

And Finally…

I just love this little bib that the Director of the rescue had made for grandbabe. Recruit them early I say!!!

  1. Love Curly Catin true supervisory role. Good luck with the fire walk, what an experience!

  2. Okay, I do think you’re mad to do the firewalk, but wishing you the best! You are already way more adventurous than I am.

Loving that golden flower at the top. So exuberant and bright! Hoping your new herb garden takes off. Nothing like walking out to one’s own garden when a pinch of herbs is wanted 🙂

    • I am beginning to think this firewalking business is crazy….lol. Thanks sooo much for supporting me, angel that you are. Oh….fresh herbs are just the best, I’d be lost without them. They are already spreading out, as are the weeds. Thanks Anne.xxx

  3. Good luck with the fire walk, you’re braver than I am! I just wanted to thank you for the lovely comment you left on my last post about the death of my mum, it was very much appreciated and helped so much to know that people were thinking of me at this sad time xx

    • Thanks Jo, hopefully all will go well on the firewalk. You have my heartfelt sympathies, it’s such a sad time for you all. Stay strong. Hugs.xxx

  4. Good job on the herb garden. As for the firewalk … I admire your bravery.

  5. You are going to have to have some pretty nifty footwork. Do you get training?

My you’re busy with the garden rearrangements. It looks really promising. Curly Cat obviously approves.

    Delightful bib design.

    xxxx

    • I sure will be dancing across those coals, at speed! I think they advise you re what speed to walk but I don’t think there is much in the way of training. I’ll let you know though. Curly is such a wonderful gardening companion. Thanks Menhir.xxx

  6. Love you new herb garden and your companion, Curly cat! Good luck with all the herbs! Wishing you and all your loved ones, a very Happy Easter!

    • Thanks Jade, gardening with Curly cat is always a treat. The herbs are thriving. Thanks for your good wishes.xxx

  7. Cute bib. Yes, start them young in caring for creatures and the environment. All the best with the fire walking event! I’ve made a note of the Animal Rescue Centre contact details re. donations as I don’t do online. Love your monkey puzzle tree herb bed and the variety of herbs you’re growing there. Wishing you and family a very happy Easter.

    • Thanks Linda, hopefully grandbabe will grow to be a compassionate little girl. Thanks for noting the rescue details. Monkey puzzle trees are so interesting aren’t they although very prickly at the same time. All the best to you all.xxx

  8. oh, dearest! Better I empty my wallet but I never ever would be such brave to walk on hot coals. And believe me, after the pictures I saw a couple of nights ago in Paris, fire became my worst of nightmares…
But I’m willing to help, other ways, you name it.
It’s a nice idea to plant herbs around the fancy pine… and they will grow and grow, keep it in mind. I had to cut to the ground my thymine (the 3 types) since were invading the path…
Hugs and a lot of love from Ticino :-)claudine and family

    • Thanks Claudine, I’m hoping all goes well with the firewalk, fingers crossed eh? Herbs do spread out and colonize don’t they, my sage is trying to take over the garden. Love and hugs to one and all.xxx

  9. Oh, my. I can’t bring myself to sponsor you — or anyone! — for a firewalk. They’re dangerous, and there have been serious injuries over here to people who’ve tried it. Best of luck to you if you go through with it!

I do love that herb garden, and I really enjoyed the photos of your contented cat. I’ve never noticed the monkey puzzler tree before, and it really is unique. I did some snooping, and found this interesting history in a Wiki article about England’s trees:

“The origin of the popular English language name “monkey puzzle” derives from its early cultivation in Britain in about 1850, when the species was still very rare in gardens and not widely known. Sir William Molesworth, the proud owner of a young specimen at Pencarrow garden near Bodmin in Cornwall, was showing it to a group of friends when one of them – the noted barrister and Benthamist Charles Austin – remarked, “It would puzzle a monkey to climb that”. As the species had no existing popular name, ‘monkey puzzler’ or ‘monkey puzzle’ stuck.”

    • Oh goodness…..I fear now for my feet! Hopefully all will be well! It is wonderful having a cat for company while gardening. Fascinating fact re the monkey puzzle tree, they are such unusual trees, I love mine although it is extremely prickly. Thanks Linda.xxx

  10. I’m sure you wouldn’t be allowed to do a firewalk if it was likely to damage your feet but I wish you lots of luck, courage and sponsorship for your adventure. I look forward to reading all about it, it’s definitely not something I’d ever be brave enough to do! Love the herb garden, hope it grows well for you! xx

    • I agree Caro, it must be safe, I’m sure I’ll get nervous before I set off though. The herb garden is growing well, they are loving the sunshine, as are the weeds!xxx

  11. I like how you have a spectator watching the progress of the herb garden.

  12. You are amazing, what will you do next!! Good luck with your walk, I hope your feet will be ok.
Your herb garden looks so good, will you be keeping the mint in a pot so that it doesn’t spread too much?
    Love the bib !

    • Ahh thanks Pauline, I’m sure all will be well with the firewalk. I forgot how invasive mint is, so thanks for the reminder, I’ll got it in a pot now! xxx

  13. Good luck for your walk, I donate to ending Live Animal Export, which is horrendous in Australia.
I love the bib for the Grandbaby.
Your herb garden looks quite inspiring, I think I’ll try a few herbs in spring.

    • Thanks Gerrie. Glad to hear that you support Live Animal Export, it’s horrendous everywhere. Oh, do try herbs, they’ll grow well in your climate.xxx

Wow … I wish you good luck with the fire walk, I’m sure it will be ok 🙂

I do like your new herb garden, it’s wonderful to pick fresh herbs from the garden, although they do work/grow well in pots on window sills too.

    I just love the bib.

    Have a wonderful Easter weekend.

    All the best Jan

    • Thanks Jan, hopefully all will go well at the firewalk! It’s always lovely being able to gather fresh herbs, I couldn’t cook without them.xxx

  15. Ha! I just returned from the store with a big bag of donations for Paddy’s Paws’ fundraiser this weekend. I hope the fire-walking will be a huge success and not too toasty!

The bib is just precious! What a darling gift!

I LOVE the herb garden beneath the monkey puzzle! I couldn’t cook without my herbs. I dry them in the oven in autumn and try not to run out before midsummer. 😄 Curly looks so sweet; what a lovely companion.

Joy to your week, and great gratitude for another generously entertaining post.

I will look forward to those 🔥- walking photos!!!😍

    • Awwww, I hope the Paddy’s Paws’ fundraiser does brilliantly, they do such a wonderful job! Good for you gaining all those donations. I’m beginning to feel a little EEK re the firewalk but I’m sure it will be fine. That is a cute bib…. I couldn’t cope without my herbs either, maybe I should dry mine too to last the winter, I tend to just pick them fresh. Oh, Curly cat is a wonderful gardening companion, such a relaxed boy around me but so feral with everyone else. Thanks Kitty, as always for such a wonderful comment. Love and hugs to you all.xxx

  16. Good luck, It’s not something that I’ve ever brave, or foolish, enough to do.
I like the monkey puzzle tree. xx

    • Thanks Flighty, I’m beginning to feel a little nervous of those hot coals now, hopefully all will go well. Monkey puzzle trees always seem so primitive to me, lovely though.xxx

  17. veggiemummy

You go girl. That fire walk is very impressive – probably one of those things that it’s nice to know you have experienced! I love the new herb garden. R and I went to a garden show last weekend and spent quite a while rubbing the leaves of all the different herbs (it was encouraged!). I liked the chocolate mint and blackcurrant sage. Love that bib. xx

    • Thanks Veggiemummy, hopefully all will be well re the firewalk! It is lovely rubbing herb leaves, those you rubbed sound delicious!xxx
