You know it’s Autumn when…

A rich earthy smell hangs heavily in the air and the undergrowth is alive with scurrying, rustling creatures going about their business.

Blushes of roses become papery and begin to fade.

Rose-hips adorn the apple trees.

Tattered daisies begin to bloom.

Out come the courgettes, chard and spinach that has now run to seed,

in go the brassicas and Winter onions, and broad beans seeds are sown.

Artichokes form sculptural heads,

along with the delicate fennel running to seed.

Sunsets begin to resemble fiery water-colour paintings,

specializing in the dramatic.

Curly cat wants in earlier each day,

and the dogs refuse to go out in the heavy Autumn rain showers.

And Finally…

Littl’urchin digging for worms,

and checking the hog- house in the hope of finding a hedgehog preparing for hibernation.

  1. Thanks Jade, you can’t beat a good sunset, especially in autumn.xxx

  2. Love those daisies and pictures of the beautiful sunsets. Your granddaughter is so very cute!

Yes, Autumn is approaching, the nights are drawing in.
It’s one of my favourite seasons and you’ve described it perfectly.

Aww Littl’urchin digging for worms, just love the photograph.

    All the best Jan

  4. You describe so beautifully the subtle and often no so subtle changes that we are now experiencing….the onset of Autumn and I LOVE it:)

Beautiful pics and my oh my Little Urchin is adorable…and growing like a little weed:)xxxxxx

    • Thanks Janet, I think autumn is my favourite season, I love how atmospheric everything is. I can’t believe how quickly Littl’urchin is growing!xxx

  5. The nights are drawing in sneakily too. I don;y seem ti have had much wear from summer clothes this year. I bet the dogs toys don;t last long in your house, it’s bad enough keeping up to toys with just one tearing them to shreds.

    • I haven’t had much wear from my summer clothes either, summer happened in spring here. Oh, dogs toys last no time here, even the harder wearing ones. Thanks Sue.xxx

  6. Autumn? Oh, my! How lucky you are. Apart from the shorter days, there isn’t a sign of autumn here. Even the birds haven’t begun flocking up for migration. Still, it’s early; we don’t usually begin to feel and see the change until nearly October.

I loved seeing Lil’ Urchin digging for worms. That close contact with the earth is good for her physically as well as emotionally. There’s general agreement among people who study such things that strong immune systems depend on early exposure to various soil pathogens and so on. A spoonful of sugar may make the medicine go down, but an occasional spoonful of dirt — metaphorically or otherwise — helps to make medicine unnecessary!

    • I totally agree about exposure to soil, I think it does kids a world of good too and it teaches them not to be afraid of insects. Here’s to your autumn rolling in. Thanks Linda.xxx

  7. A changing of the seasonal guard – we look forward to spring. Been cold these mornings, rained today.

  8. Your granddaughter is delightful, I love the photo of her looking for hedgehogs. There is a definite autumnal feel in the air isn’t there. It is so chilly in the mornings and evenings now isn’t it.

    • Thanks Sustainablemum. I just love the way toddlers crouch, so cute. Hopefully she’ll see another hedgehog soon. Oh yes, autumn is here and early, you can’t mistake that chill.xxx

  9. I’m so so so so jealous! Autumn rain showers? Cooler evenings? Those can’t come soon enough here. How lovely that your anemones are already blooming. Mine have just popped up. I can see Little H taking after her Grandma, getting the feel of soil in her hands. Such a sweet photo.

    • Oh, how I get your need for rain and cooler days, I’ll do a rain dance hoping that brings it on! H is enjoying the garden and all it’s creepy crawlies, it’s so lovely seeing them for the first time through her eyes. Could you whatsapp me…lost my phone and have a new one but can’t see you on my contacts. Same number. Thanks Anne.xxxx

  10. Beautiful portayal of autumn. It’s amazing how quickly the weather begins to change in the early days of September.

  11. Uuuhuuu, hope little Urchin doesn’t eat the worms, like Emanuele Giosuè did!
So far, so god. He has passed four exams… the results of another four are missing!
Fingers crossed. Now he is at home until mid-September, then the new semester starts again.
A big hug, towards the autumn that has already brought universal floods here in Ticino
    :-)claudine

    • I’m laughing hearing about Emanuele Giosuè eating worms. To date, Littl’urchin hasn’t gone for that! How lovely to hear he passed four exams, I’m not surprised though, he is as bright as a new pin. I hope the other results are found. Oh, sorry to hear about the floods, we have to collectively do something to reverse climate change. Love and hugs to you all. xxxx

  12. Hello there Snowbird 😉
Little urchin reminds me of myself as a child so very fascinated with nature and all her creatures .. Autumn is my VERY favorite season .. I love the trees changing colour .. that crisp scent to the air .. the darker evenings .. aside from an enormous amount of work I have to accomplish in the garden, it is all a wonderful moment in time for me before the snow flurries start ! LOL .. I love your photos of the sky .. I am a sucker for sunsets in the country.
The dogs made me laugh .. that fennel is gorgeous .. so tall !! I missed out on dill this year and I really mean I missed it ! no butterfly babies …
I will sneak a post in here and there when i can .. it is just going to be so busy here .. our son is coming home from the States .. that is a whole other drama I have to learn to handle but I am happy he is back in Canada and not there, that place is going to explode sadly.
I have to finish off in a bright note … Halloween is coming !! LOL
    Keep safe and well 😉

    • You sound like me as a child, I was totally feral, running wild in the mountains of Wales. I think autumn is my favourite season too, it’s all so mellow and atmospheric. Good to know you’ll add the odd post, always good to keep up with your news. I’m glad your son is out of the USA, a madman rules the roost there. Thanks Joy.xxx

  13. A lovely blog post describing your life in early September. Rain or shine you’re being very organised with your growing and enjoying all the benefits of this time of the year. xxL

  14. Lovely post and pictures. Early autumn is a wonderful time of year. xx

  15. Autumn certainly seems to have arrived early this year, I’ve felt it in the air for a few weeks now and the nights are drawing in. I’m still hoping that we’ll get one last blast of summer though before autumn definitely settles in. Lovely photos.

    • Thanks Jo, autumn is early this year, I’m surprised to see the nights drawing in so quickly. We always seem to be walking home with the dogs in twilight now. Here’s to one last blast of summer. xxx

  16. Beautiful post and photos. I’m normally more excited for autumn than I am at the moment. Owing to Covid, I feel a little cheated this year and want more summer……… and maybe a holiday! :O)
Littl’Urchin digging for worms is adorable. Anything I should be doing to my hedgehog box to encourage visitors? R made it for me last Christmas, so this is its first proper year.
    Enjoy the new season. xx

    • Oh, I’m with you, I feel cheated this summer too. We have a holiday booked in the Lakes in October, but who knows what will happen between then and now. You do get sick of cancelling things don’t you? Fill your hog house with straw or dried leaves and leave non-fish flavoured dried cat/dog biscuits and water outside. It would be lovely if you got a tennant! Thanks Veggiemummy.xxx

  17. Gerrie Mackey

Yes, I could smell the autumn in this post too…and a busy time ahead planting autumn veggies. Loved the photo of your hubby and granddaughter looking for hedgehogs, it is going to be exciting for her when she sees one. It’s lovely for her to explore the garden. Have fun getting the autumn plants in…

    • Thanks Gerrie. Littl’urchin saw a hedgehog in the garden, sadly it was out in the daylight and is now in the rescue, but she was thrilled to see it.xxx

  18. Oh, what an absolutely breathtaking post! Such glorious photos and I could smell autumn on that walk with the pups. Li’l Urchin could not be more adorable; what a heaven you’ve given her to smell and see and explore.

Happy to see sweet Curly. And hope a hedgehog materializes!

Oh, I do wish we were closer and I could don my mask and hop over to visit across the fence.

Thank you for this happy post…everything about autumn makes me happy. I even set out a few Halloween decorations already…who’s going to see them and judge when we’re confined to our homes?! Ha!

Excited to see what your garden produces next! xoxox

    • Ahhh, thanks Kitty. It is lovely seeing Littl’urchin again, how I missed her during lockdown. How lovely it would be to have you on the other side of the fence. Good to know you are getting your decorations out for Halloween. I think the same, the house has never been cleaner but nobody come in to see it. Love and hugs.xxxx

  19. Busy, busy summer flora, making ready for their Autumn rest.
Even your veggies have slowed down. Your next input will give a little vigour to your patch.
Beautiful sunsets that don’t seem to really belong to us in these isles.
Curly cat making haste for cold night warm comforts,
And little beauty, l’ilUrchin fascinted by all the new experiences surrounding her.
    Brilliant!
    xxxxx

    • It is lovely seeing the winter veggies going in after a frantic growing season. It’s lovely showing youngsters things for the first time, they are so interested in everything. Thanks Menhir.xxx

  20. I agree, autumn is on its way! You had a beautiful sunset, we had a lovely sunrise this morning, didn’t last long though. Your grandaughter is becoming a super gardener!

  21. I should think your garden is an absolute treasure trove for gorgeous lil urchin! What a lovely post. xx

    • Thanks Gill, oh yes, gardens certainly are treasure troves for kids. Yesterday Littl’urchin met a caterpillar and a cocoon.xxx

  22. Love the apples with rose hips, and the pics of your granddaughter.
